After the Wedge Overlook, we headed down into the San Rafael swell on the Buckhorn Wash road. We really wanted to see a dinosuar track but the spot wasn’t marked and we couldn’t find it. We did find the amazing panel of rock art with both pictographs (paintings) and petroglyphs (carvings). They were very impressive because of the large size, number and variety of drawings. The pictographs were made by around the time of Christ by the Barrier Canyon Culture. The petroglyphs were made by the Fremont Indians (1,000 years ago). Some of the drawings look like Angels with wings. We spent some time in the wash looking for rocks—there were lots of agates. The cottonwoods were just lovely and yellow. We passed over the San Rafael river and saw an old swinging bridge made by the CCC. We couldn’t stop because Natalie was finally asleep. I want to go back and camp along the San Rafael river. After many miles of gravel road, we made it to our Hotel in Green River. The kids played at the park across the street and then colored in the room.
