New Employment

At the end April, Colin got an email from the manager of a geotechnical department at another company. He had found Colin’s profile on Linkedin. He said he would like to meet with Colin about a possibility to work for Parsons Brinkerhoff. Colin took a long lunch one day and went and went to lunch with him. It was kind of an informal interview. Apparently he liked Colin because he asked Colin to come into their office with a resume for a more formal interview.

Colin took the day off from work so he could go interview. It felt so deceitful, like he was cheating on his company. I kept watching the clock, waiting to get a call from Colin about how it went. Two hours of an interview later Colin called. The manager said he wanted to meet with Colin one more time and have him talk to the Regional geotechnical manager. So Colin took another day off from work. At that meeting, he was surprised when they asked him to basically name his price… “what do you value yourself at?”. Luckily he had put thought into that before and could give a reasonable answer. They told him to expect an offer by the end of the day.

We were at a park when Colin got the call.

Colin accepted. His boss was very surprised by Colin’s resignation,  but he said if he were in Colin’s shoes, he would have done the same thing..

We still are marveling how this fell in our laps. Colin has looked for other employment in the past, but wasn’t currently. PB does larger engineering projects than Terracon does—they’re known for tunneling. They are also an international company so Colin may get the chance to do some travel. Guess we need to get him a passport. He will also need to become licensed in all the western states to start out. His first project is going to be oil refinery expansion in north salt lake. He’ll have to wear a flame resistant suit while on site.

Colin’s current office is in draper, right on the point of the mountain. His new office will be all the way up in Murray. We’ll be thinking and scheming a lot this summer as we try to figure out the best place for our family to go. It’s exciting. I like change.
